PRESCRIPTION WEIGHT LOSS INJECTIONS

Learn more about prescription weight loss injections

Injectable weight loss medications are tools to help manage weight for adults with obesity or weight-related health issues like type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure. They’re part of a complete plan that includes healthy eating, regular exercise, and behavioral changes. These treatments can help people achieve and maintain significant weight loss when used correctly. METHOD OF ACTION These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite and blood sugar. After eating, GLP-1 signals the brain to feel full, slows digestion, and stabilizes blood sugar levels. By enhancing these effects, the medications help control hunger, reduce calorie intake, and promote weight loss. In addition to curbing appetite, these drugs improve how the body uses insulin, making them particularly beneficial for individuals with type 2 diabetes. Some versions are specifically approved for diabetes management, while others focus on weight loss. BENEFITS & RESULTS Injectable weight loss medications have shown impressive results in clinical trials: - Significant Weight Loss: The primary benefit of these injections is their ability to help individuals lose weight effectively. Studies have shown that people using these treatments can achieve substantial weight loss when combined with lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise. On average, users can lose 10-20% of their starting weight over 6-16 months - Appetite Control & Reduced Cravings: These injections work by acting on specific hormones that regulate appetite, making individuals feel fuller for longer periods. This can lead to reduced caloric intake and better control over portion sizes, helping people stay on track with their weight loss goals. The medication helps curb cravings, particularly for unhealthy, high-calorie foods. - Improved Blood Sugar Control: Originally developed for managing type 2 diabetes, this class of medication also helps regulate blood sugar levels. By improving insulin sensitivity and reducing blood sugar spikes after meals, these injections can provide added benefits for individuals with insulin resistance or prediabetes. - Reduction of Obesity-Related Health Risks: Weight loss achieved through these injections can help lower the risk of obesity-related complications such as heart disease, stroke, sleep apnea, and 13 types of cancer. The treatment may also improve mobility and joint health, reducing pain for those with obesity-related osteoarthritis. ELIGIBILITY: Who Qualifies? To determine if these injections are suitable, individuals must undergo a thorough assessment and a detailed initial consultation with a healthcare provider. This process typically involves evaluating the person’s medical history, current health status, and weight-related conditions. In general, these injections are most commonly recommended for: - Adults with a BMI of 30 or higher (obesity - Adults with a BMI of 27 or higher (overweight) who also have obesity-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea - In certain cases, individuals who have tried other weight loss methods, such as diet and exercise, with limited success A healthcare provider will assess the person’s suitability based on individual risk factors, medical conditions, and potential interactions with other medications. PROCEDURE: How Injections Are Administered These weight management injections are administered subcutaneously (under the skin), often in the abdomen or thigh. They are typically given once a week. After initial training by a healthcare provider, many individuals are able to self-administer the injections at home. The training ensures proper technique and confidence in using the injection device safely and effectively. COMMON SIDE EFFECTS While generally safe, these medications can cause some side effects as the body adjusts - Mild Effects: Nausea, diarrhea, constipation, or fatigue. - Serious but Rare: Pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, or kidney issues.   CONTRAINDICATIONS & CAUTIONS - Pregnancy & breastfeeding - Personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer - Personal or family history of MEN2 - Severe gastrointestinal issues
